Simple Wine Rack.

One of my favorite custom furniture makers (Eastvold Custom) just recently released a new series of wine racks. These hyper-simple, utilitarian designed pieces are a perfect examples of form following function to wonderfully little place I call good design. These great looking wine racks are available in both walnut or reclaimed Fir and offer the option of holding between 3 and 6 bottles of wine at any one time.

URBANbuild: The Fourth Generation

The Tulane University School of Architecture recently broke ground on their fourth URBANbuild prototype home. The URBANbuild program was started after Hurricane Katrina as a collaboration between a Tulane design studio led by professor and local architect Byron Mouton, and the Neighborhood Housing Services. NHS is a nonprofit organization that obtains the building lots, establishes the budget for each URBANbuild project and eventually finds a family to live in the student-built structures. Essentially, NHS is the students' "client," and for better or worse, this forces the design studio to deal with many real-world issues that they wouldn't normally confront in architecture school.

IDS 09 Prototype: Zoe Mowat, Ridgely Studio
Works, Science and Sons

ridgely_studio_pendant.jpg
Above left, Zoe Mowat's Stack Lamp parts, turned walnut and oak, steel, and felt, can be stacked and re-stacked any time. Inspired by simple childhood building blocks, the Stack Lamp "engages its owner to pile, arrange and reposition the various forms as desired. The endless possible variations allow the lamp to be as individual as the owner." To the right, a pendant lamp by Ridgely Studio Works, more after the jump and Science and Sons' sailcloth Lift pendant light.

IDS 09 Prototype: Brad Turner Glass, TIMID Glass

brad_turner_glass.jpg
One of the most interesting sections of the IDS show is Prototype, a juried show of work by a mix of emerging and established Canadian designers. Part of the Studio North area that features work already in production, Prototype presents concepts that have not yet reached production stage. Among them we saw Brad Turner's adjustable Retrofit Bowls above and TIMID Glass' illustrated glass Cartons bowls after the jump.
