Choosing the right television for your living room of home theater has raised a real "fork in the road" question for several years now, Plasma or LCD. As the original flat panel days evolved Plasma was the emerging future of the newest technology and was looking like the long term option for production around the world. As LCD's emerged they seemed to offer a solution to the often higher priced Plasma's which were developing a reputation for having problems with "burn in" and a "short life span" of 6 to 10,000 hours. Even though these issues have been addressed where even the most used Plasma television would last 45 years if on every day for 6 hours, LCD is winning out as major manufacturers are abandoning Plasma production including Vizio and Pioneer with more to follow.

One thing many of you will notice in a side by side comparison which will draw your eye and probably dollars is the often brighter LCD that really pops on the sales floor. They are intentionally brightened as the sellers know people associate brighter with better not to mention you are more likely to pat attention to these models. On the other hand the sales floor is often illuminated with fluorescent lighting which only hurts the case of the Plasma even more which is why the smaller / higher end electronic stores are more successful with them. Add to this the cost effectiveness and availability of the LCD and other negative myths like Plasma screens omitting harmful gas and needing to be refilled with plasma gas once in a while, and the future looks quite bleak for the suffering Plasma production. The good news is, LCD technology continues to improve and the prices are getting lower every year proving that the benefits of competition and mass production still show up in the price tag.

After sorting through the contest entries for the last 18 hours or so I have come to a decision. I'll spare you the details of my agony, but know that I agonized over this.
The winner of a $3200 gift certificate from Metallo Arts and ten hours of my design time is a woman named Lisa and her Pysanka kitchen. Pysanka is the Ukrainian folk art of painting eggs and objects with meaningful and intricate geometric designs.
I am a sucker for ethnicity of any kind and Lisa pulled out the stops in her incredibly detailed vision of a kitchen based on a Pysanka egg. Here are some excerpts:

Congratulations Lisa!

Submissions for YLighting My Room are coming in, above, Scott's contemporary condo and a Louis Poulsen PH Artichoke, one of three pendants he chose from the YLighting catalog. Says Scott, "The place was in rough shape when we got it, but after some careful renovations we've made it our own. Throughout the condo, we've tried to blend modern with the vintage art-deco charm that was original to the place. Most of our money went into the bathroom and kitchen... unfortunately, we are stuck with the (ugly) vintage light fixtures. We want the lighting to be the focal point of the room, the conversation piece. It has to be drastic, modern, eye-catching and unique all at the same time. It should also light the room sufficiently! A tall task for lights!"

Add to myYahoo! When living in small spaces it is critical to select the right furniture that can make use of the space well while providing the needs of you and your guests. The Trinus sofa bed is a small footprint piece of furniture that begins as a chair and winds up a sofa bed. Many sofa bed models on the market are bulky and before their transition look like a normal sofa or couch. The transformation from "chair to sleeping area" is rarer and in this, Trinus has delivered. It's also nice that it can be converted into a chaise lounge, which is a great way to relax with a book or television. More information: here.
