Adding Privacy to an Open Loft

If you have a loft in your home, you may wish that it were a little more secluded, but part of the charm of a loft is that it is an open space.  However there are ways that you can give the space a little more of an intimate feeling, even though it is a wide, open loft area.

Defined Space

Of course there are a myriad of things that you can do with your loft to give it a bit more privacy.  One way that you can define it as a separate living space is to use your furniture and accessories to define your living area.  By using a throw rug on the floor, you can anchor your seating area and muffle footsteps in the loft.  You can use a couch to create a natural divider between the loft and the larger space.  You can also use lighting to visually define the loft space.

Cover Windows

Frequently loft spaces are blessed with huge windows, and while these are stunning to look at, they do not do much for privacy.  Covering these windows with blinds will go a long way towards offering a little shade and privacy.  Another good thing about shades is that you can regulate how much light you want to let into the room.  With the shades completely open, you can feel like you are in a treetop retreat, and with the blinds shut, you are safely tucked away in your loft.  The shades will also keep you from feeling like you are in a fish bowl, and their simple and clean lines will not obstruct the view when you do wish to open up to the world.

The Natural Divide

You can also take creating privacy very literally by using some sort of room divider to create a barrier between the loft and the room at large.  A decorative screen can really make a beautiful statement, and it can suit any style.  You can hang sliders from tracks in the ceiling made out of any material from fabric, to plastic, to beads.  You can also use a series of large, potted plants to make a physical room divider that will offer a little more privacy from the surrounding areas.  This design comes in particularly handy when you are using the space as and office space or a bedroom.

Space Within a Space

If you do not actually need privacy and just want to create the feel of a separate space, you can use furniture to define the space much as you would in a large room.  You can create an intimate furniture grouping in the loft space, and anchor the room with a piece of furniture like a couch or an end table.  Adding swivel chairs is a good idea because it gives you the versatility to be part of the intimate space, or to swivel around and join the larger space.  Bookcases create a defining edge to your loft space and help define the area as separate from the larger space as well.
